Lopez's testimony of his detention as a political prisoner from 1976-1979 in clandestine detention centers was key in the conviction of Etchecolatz. Testifying before a court in La Plata, Lopez described the prolonged bouts of torture under Etchecolatz's direct supervision.
Since the return of civilian government in 1983, lawyers, relatives of those who "disappeared" while the country was under military rule and members of non-governmental organizations investigating those "disappearances" have been threatened, harassed and attacked.
